  The Default Mode Network (DMN) is  a network of brain regions that are typically active during periods of rest and internally focused thought, such as self-reflection, daydreaming, and remembering past events .  It's a "default" state of the brain, becoming less active when focused on external tasks.  The DMN is thought to play a role in various cognitive functions, including memory, social cognition, and self-referential thought.   The DMN is a set of interconnected brain areas, primarily located in the medial prefrontal cortex, posterior cingulate cortex, and medial temporal lobes.  These regions show decreased activity when the brain is engaged in goal-oriented tasks but increase activity during periods of rest, mind-wandering, and self-related processing The DMN is typically studied using  brain imaging techniques,  like fMRI, which measure brain activity.  Researchers often compare brain activity during tasks that require attention to...
